An aquarium water pump can be used for closed-loop circulation or as a return pump from a sump or wet/dry filter. Aquarium pumps can also be used to power a protein skimmer in saltwater applications. Aquarium water pumps should turn the water over 5 to 10 times per hour in a fish-only (FO) system. A fish tank pump should turn over the water in a reef aquarium 10 to 20 times per hour, although many hobbyists prefer a turnover of 40 to 50 times per hour. An air pump aquarium will stabilize pH and provide the oxygen animals need for respiration. An aquarium filter pump can be relatively inexpensive—under $20—for smaller fish tanks.
